Overview of the Webquest
Author: Srividya Jagannathan, Educator
Purpose
This is an 5th and 6th grade interdisciplinary unit that connects Mathematics and ELA standards. Students will work cooperatively to research and calculate the cost of a vacation with the given requirements. After planning for their vacations, students will present the information gained using a multimedia presentation.
Students will demonstrate their math skills in multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals, and multiplying and dividing fractions. Students will be able to use technology to research, analyze and create a presentation while working collaboratively. They will use presentation tools such as PowerPoint, Thinglink, Digital Brochure, or any other media of your choice.
Standards Addressed
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.6
Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.7
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.5
Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.B.2
Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.B.3
Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.7
Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and refocusing the inquiry when appropriate.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.8
Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources; assess the credibility of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and providing basic bibliographic information for sources.
ISTE Standards for Students
This project will take approximately 2 weeks of class time, if each class period was at least 50 minutes long. Teacher will be expected to facilitate as students are working to provide support. Peer partner will be selected by teachers to promote collaboration and peer tutoring.
Suggestions
Conference with student pairs at least twice a week. Ask students to submit the Cost Analysis Sheet and the Project Details by a certain deadline (5 or 6 days). They may proceed with the presentation only after the research and budget calculations are completed.
